|When you started competing in international competitions, did you see yourself being in the top-10?
Like every other European athlete, I started my international career in the European youth cups and managed to be very successful. Every year I was able to improve and after two 2nd places at the youth world championships, I won the next 3 consecutive youth worlds. This helped me a lot to gain experience and made the transition into the World cup easier. At my first World cup in Lead I got 4th and was surprised and extremely happy.
What motivated you to compete rather than just to climb outside?
I started climbing in Innsbruck and joined the Innsbruck climbing team. In this team it was normal to do competitions and I loved competing from the first moment on. I love rock climbing and competition climbing at the same time. Comp climbing is very special, it’s not only about your ability to climb well but also to be mentally strong, you need to be able to handle the pressure and collect all your energy for that one very important try. Besides you get to know a lot of people, different cultures, countries and cities!
What are some struggles you face as an athlete?
Injuries, bad results, hard training are some things that an athlete can struggle with, but with the right support and a good mind set I think you can overcome everything. I’m very thankful to my family, friends, coaches and physiotherapists who have supported me even more through the harder times!
What influenced you to start competing?
My godfather took me to the climbing gym in Innsbruck a couple of times and the coaches of the climbing team saw me and asked if I wanted to join their team and started training. I joined the training once and had so much fun that I never stopped!
Who most helped you get to where you are right now?
Definitely my family! But also my friends, coaches and physiotherapists played a very important role! Furthermore I was very lucky that there were a lot of other strong guys in my age training with me which got my best friends at the same time. We were able to motivate and push each other to get stronger and stronger!
What advice could you give to Young Athletes?
Fun and motivation is the most important thing in improving as a sportsman. Even the best training program in the world won’t make you stronger if you don’t enjoy it and you need to punish yourself doing it.
